The Egyptian Museum

General Information

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, located near Tahrir Square, is one of the world's most famous museums. Established in 1835, it was relocated several times, from Azbakeya Garden to the Citadel, then to Bulaq by Auguste Mariette, before moving to Giza due to flooding. Its current building was opened in 1902 by Gaston Maspero during the reign of Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and it houses over 180,000 artifacts. The museum's pink-granite palace building holds one of the largest public collections of Pharaonic art in the world, including Tutankhamun's treasures and a famous royal mummies hall that was a must-see for visitors for generations.
